The TMYC runs shore-based RYA courses
and hands-on practical sessions using club member's boats.

 

RYA Approved Courses

Each year the Club offers RYA approved shore-based navigation classes including:

Day Skipper
Shorebased Course

For beginners and crew who would like to become actively involved in navigation should attend. The syllabus arms would-be skippers with enough knowledge to navigate around familar waters by day.

Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Course

A Course for more experienced skippers which takes them up to the theory knowledge required for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Practical Examination.

RYA teaching establichment

Both courses follow the published RYA syllabus.

The lecturers are all qualified RYA instructors, and can call upon experienced TMYC members to assist as required. A variety of lecture methods are employed (computers, videos, OHP, white-board) with an emphasis on practical exercises.

TMYC is an RYA Recognised Training Centre.

 

Dates

The courses are usually run over the autumn and winter months and last for approximately 26 weeks. They are run on Wednesday evening each week in TMYC's clubhouse, and can typically accomodate 45 students.

These courses are available to both members and visitors alike.

Enrolment

Wed 8 September, 2010.

Classes Start

3rd Wednesday in September.
 

Fees

The fees for both Day Skipper and YachtMaster Courses are the same.

  • Members of ATYC Member Clubs receive a 30% Discount

Please note that:
1. these fees do not include the course work material that can be purchased on enrolment night.
2. non members are made temporary members for the duration of the course, and have the opportunity to become full members on completion of the course.

TMYC's
own training

For TMYC members, there is usually a series of Sunday Clinics where all aspects of boating are covered, in both theory and practical. The topics can include:

- mooring on the river;
- mooring in a tidal stream;
- handling your boat in a lock;
- towing another (on the river and at sea);
- knots;
- rope handling;
- manoeuvres in a tidal stream;
- skipper /crew responsibilities;
- safety in practice
- and much much more

The practical sessions are carried out on one or more club member's boats.
